I have been painting a lot of horses this year and this makes me very happy! As I layout and compose a painting, I think about what colors are going to work best with each new piece. Yesterday I did a little pencil sketch to start thinking about a new painting. As I was considering what color to make the horse, I naturally went to bright chestnut with four white socks! That’s the coloring of my mare, Kate. It’s not just that I adore her, but also that the chestnut color against the green background really looks great. But maybe this one wants to be black. Or bay. Or gray. I LOVE grays! Hmmm…

So I went to Facebook and asked my friends and followers to make color suggestions for the 12″ X 16″ acrylic on canvas on board finished painting. At the time of writing this I have 83 color ideas! It’s wonderful that so many people are interested in seeing this painting come to fruition, but now I really don’t know what to do about the color of the horse!

One commenter suggested I let people bid on it and the high bidder would get the horse painted in their own preference of color. Great idea! Currently the high bid is by Jan Steiner for $300. If you would like to bid on this, please do so in the comments below. Bidding will close at noon on Friday, July 21. Then I will let everyone know what color this critter will be and get to work painting it!
