I’m hoping to finish up a large painting of three riders and their horses today. With that in mind, I decided to do a quick study from an old photograph of a woman sitting aside her lovely chestnut horse as a doodle warm up. Doing these sketches helps me to think about little details like how the hooves need to be placed and what shape they are from different angles. It’s these minor things that can tie me up for a long time on a painting! It drives me nuts when they don’t look right!
