Sometimes you just have to go back and try again. This painting is much more what I was looking for in representing the peacefulness and beauty of the lake. I googled Lake Ninevah and found a photo of it in winter that gave me the perspective I wanted. It’s funny. The mountain (Okemo) in the background seemed huge in my memory, and that’s why it showed up so prominently in yesterday’s painting. From the photo, I could see that just pushing the mountain back creates the sense of largeness, and yet it doesn’t even come above the height of the closer hills around the lake. I like the light on the water in this one and the dark foreground water, where you’re looking straight down into it, as opposed to looking “across” it the way you do towards the distance.
