Old Vermont Barn 5- Silas Bigelow Barn
Silas Bigelow was born December 24, 1766 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He came to Vermont as a young man, settling in Weathersfield and marrying Elizabeth Beaman Boynton. The earliest records I have found have Silas and Elizabeth’s home being built in 1799 and the first barn was probably built then also. They lived there until they died, both in 1833. Silas was a Deacon at the North Springfield (VT) Baptist Church from 1807 until his death.
This painting shows Silas and Elizabeth heading out for a church service in their later years. The barn complex behind them is as it is today. It stands boldly representing its long history.
The original 16″ x 20″ artwork is a combination of painting, torn papers, prints and textural washes to create an image as varied and complex as the old barn itself.
