William Jarvis came to Weathersfield from Boston in 1811 purchasing “a tannery, bark, saw and gristmills, beside the rich meadows, and some small farms suitable for pastures.”• He had been Consul to Portugal and in spite of the restrictive laws at the time, Consul Jarvis was able to buy several thousand merino sheep just before leaving Portugal. These sheep became a huge industry in Vermont in the first half of the 19th century.
This barn is on land which was owned by Jarvis. It is unclear when this barn was built, but it appears to be constructed from large posts and beams from a previous barn- probably one of William’s farm structures.
The original 18″ x 24″ artwork incorporates an 1810 Bill of Lading, signed by Wm. Jarvis for two ewes being delivered to then President James Madison. The sheep in the foreground were painted using an advertisement from the time which promoted the fine merino wool these sheep provided.
- From The Life and Times of Hon. William Jarvis, of Weathersfield, Vermont written by his daughter Mary Sparhawk Cutts.
