There are a lot of problems with painted canvas floorcloths.
The first is that when you decide you want one, you’re faced with that daunting, literally “blank” canvas staring you in the face. It’s not like going to a rug store and picking out the one that is closest in size to what you need, has some of the colors you like and a pattern that you can learn to live with. It’s quite the opposite! When you tell me about (or better yet, show me) your room, your favorite patterns, paintings, magazine photos and what really catches your eye, I go to work creating the perfect piece that will work with everything you describe to me- size, colors AND design. Go ahead and tempt me with something I haven’t done before. I love exploring intricate patterns and paintings and turning them into my own creation that you can then enjoy in your home.
The second is that they are just so darn easy to care for! Your dog can pee on it; your kid can drive her tricycle on it; you can drop a plate of pasta with a full load of marinara sauce on it (and spill your red wine while you’re cleaning up this mess) and no one will ever know. The Dry Cleaners hate me because people who have ditched their wool rugs for floorcloths never come by anymore!
The third is that when you order a floorcloth (or mural, or painting) from me you end up with a little piece of Vermont and it’s artsy-fartsy ways and “quirky” ideals built right into it. I’ve tried to mitigate this, but it just happens. Each piece is painstakingly created, using simple tools and slow methods. This is how we do things in Vermont. Nothing happens quickly, but it’s always done very well, and then when it’s done we go outside and play for awhile!
Deciding where you want your floorcloths to go is another issue. Under the dining room table? In the front hall? In the breakfast room? On the sun porch? In the study? So many choices…
So if you can get over all of these drawbacks, maybe a floorcloth will work for you. Drop me an email and start describing the space in your home that is begging for one. Please keep in mind that I only do pieces over 30 square feet now. This is so I can go all out on fewer, larger pieces!
